Having migrated to Chicago for a job with the Rand McNally map company in the early aughts, J, or Justin, spent his following years playing in friends’ projects in Chicago’s active DIY scene. In his own time, he was mapping out out a series of personal recordings in his rudimentary home studio, it was these recordings that would develop into the first EP, Olympic Village. They were a three piece consisting of Monty Colvin, Alan Doss and David von Ohlerking. They released one album, the self-titled The Awful Truth. After the band split, Colvin and Doss formed the Galactic Cowboys. 2) The Awful Truth is the name that Brent Colbert from Salt Lake City, Utah records under. Barely out of their teens, Panther Ray's Joey Johnson, Evan Kramer, Daniel Ries, and Andy Rockwood are childhood friends floating in place in time where the weird underground recording geniuses of the 60s and the 90s share a meal. Apparently that place is somewhere in the outer limits of their hometown of Saint Paul, Minnesota. Instruments and vocal mics trade hands regularly as the four multi-instrumentalists celebrate a poly amorous cacophony of junk psychedelia, youth-powered garage rock, exuberant pop weirdness, and experimental studio wizardry.
